Vision

Overview & History

Seambiotic was founded in 2003 with an objective to grow and process marine micro algae using a revolutionizing ecologically based environmental system. For the last five years, Seambiotic has carried out R&D pilot study comprising about a 1,000 meter square of ponds at the power plant of the Israeli Electric Corporation in Ashkelon.

Throughout the study, new and advanced research methods have been developed for cultivation of various species of marine micro algae using the power station's carbon dioxide emissions released directly from their smokestacks and which pass through pipelines directly to Seambiotic's open ponds.

The reduction of pollution is a growing challenge to the civilized world, in general, and to the energy industry, in particular. Once Seambiotic's activities are scaled up, the company is expected to contribute to a sizeable reduction in Carbon dioxide emissions. The pilot plant runs with a proven success and has reached an impressive concentration of algae containing high percentage of lipids and carbohydrates in a very short term, which promotes the production of bio-fuel.

Seambiotic is the first company in the world that is utilizing flue gases, from coal burning power stations, for algae cultivation. Seambiotic possesses unique technology for gas transfer and cleaning, command and control of its concentration in cultivation ponds and its absorption in the algae for energy rich products.  

Algae can grow preferably in open ponds over closed bioreactors. Algal ponds are generally shallow to ensure the penetration of light into the culture; they are kept continuously mixed by gentle stirring. Growth of microalgae requires an abundance of solar radiation  on a wide range of temperatures, therefore, large-scale open culture should be sited where both light and temperature permit growth outdoor.  The algae "feed" comes from the supply of carbon dioxide. Feed of carbon dioxide is the biggest cost item in the long run of algal cultivation.

Seambiotic cultivates a few selected speices of marine autotrophic microalgae with high content of lipids and carbohydrates as equivilant to the production of bio-diesel and bio-ethanol.

 The Company's invention provides a method for growing photosynthetic organisms using flue gases from a fossil-fuel power plants. 

Regarding the cultivation of microalgae technology and intellectual property relating to the exclusive methods of the refining and processing of such algae, Seambiotic has protected itself in the form of patents.

This technology will enable the following:

1. Significantly reducing manufacturing costs due to the exploitation of existing low cost resources.

2.   Superior quality Algae: their composition of proteins and fats and their low percentage of chlorophyll breakdown.

3. Improve the environment by gas emissions from power stations.

The fish extracts the fatty acids from the microalgae found in their natural environment. Our product is high - value marine microalgae containing omega - 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). Microalgae can be used to produce the long chain fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexanoic (DHA) that are not present in higher plants. EPA and DHA together with other fatty acids constitute a group called omega-3.

Marketing of the omega 3 oil extracted from microalgae is expected to be highly profitable due to its relatively low production costs.  Although microalgae cultivation is a complicated procedure, Seambiotic's know-how gives the Company a significant competitive advantage in the short/medium term.

The EPA & DHA extracted directly from microalgae has several benefits:

  • Vegetarian resources
  • The product is "pure" - NO heavy metals and PCB's
  • Does not have the "off" flavor of fish oil
  • Has no cholesterol content
  • Can be used directly as feed for agriculture, which will then introduce omega-3 fatty 
    acids to eggs, milk and other
  • It can be used directly as feed for aquaculture

Medical Uses

Scientists believe polyunsaturated fats (EPA & DHA) are important in preventing a number of diseases, including heart diseases, inflammatory disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, mental disorders, such as bipolar disorder and attention deficit disorder, and certain types of cancer. The medical use of omega-3 fatty acid is increasing. The American Heart Association strongly encourages increased consumption of fish oil, singles out EPA and DHA from fish as the best for heart health and sets out recommended daily intake of 2-3 grams of EPA/DHA for lowering plasma levels of triglycerides.

 

Child Benefits of Omega-3

EPA and DHA are important building blocks for healthy and normal growth and development. In early infant nutrition a major emphasis is on the addition of DHA, which is a structural component of the brain; however, human breast milk contains both DHA and EPA in a 5:1 ratio. This demonstrates the importance of the balance of DHA and EPA in the diet. Studies suggest that after age five EPA plays a more active role in learning and development. In additional, in numerous studies conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom, Unites States and Norway over the past fifteen years, many found that there was a subtle but consistent link between eating fish during pregnancy (or Omega-3 intake) and children's subsequent test scores, even after adjusting for factors such as the age and education of the mother, whether she breastfed, and the quality of the home environment (i.e. in poverty, divorce etc). The largest effect was seen in a test of the children's understanding of words at the age of 15 months. Children whose mothers ate fish at least once a week scored 7 percent higher than those whose mothers never ate fish.

Why Joule?

Limited energy supplies, pricing volatility and environmental concerns have converged to create one of the greatest challenges of our time. Biotechnology Breakthroughs
Joule is applying advanced genome engineering to develop a library of proprietary organisms, each one optimized for productivity according to the desired end product. Because the organisms are engineered to directly synthesize and secrete fuels, we will avoid costly steps such as large-scale biomass production and collection or other downstream refinement. Our technology has already been proven with the direct conversion of CO2 to liquid hydrocarbons and ethanol, avoiding the economic and environmental burden of multi-step, petroleum- or biomass-dependent methods.
Unique Closed System Approach
Joule incorporates process, materials, photonic and thermal engineering to make our Helioculture™ platform commercial-ready. Unlike any other closed system approach, our modular SolarConverter® system is designed for direct fuel production in a single-step, continuous process. It achieves high net energy gains while managing the photon capture, CO2 delivery and mixing, thermal management, product synthesis and initial separation in an efficient, direct-to-end-product™ process, minimizing the steps to market. The system's interconnected assemblies are designed for ease of installation, making it scalable and customizable to any desired output levels based on land and CO2 availability.
Multi-Product Capability
Joule's unique combination of genome and process engineering has enabled a technology platform that is capable of making multiple end products, including liquid hydrocarbons that are fungible with existing diesel fuel and can also be refined to make renewable jet fuel and gasoline. Our products will include ultra clean diesel, ethanol and commodity chemicals, directly targeting multi-billion dollar opportunities in the oil, chemical, consumer and agricultural industries.
Ecologically-Smart Method
Joule's production process avoids the depletion of precious natural resources, with no dependency on agricultural land, crops or fresh water. At the same time, an independently-conducted lifecycle analysis shows that, through our intake of waste CO2, we have the potential to reduce harmful carbon emissions on a large scale up to 90% in some instances.
Unlimited Scale and Supply
Joule efficiently captures sunlight to produce energy in liquid form, enabling tremendous scale, storage and transport of energy without the power degradation that limits storage of electricity. This advantage, combined with our direct, continuous process and use of waste CO2 as a sole feedstock, creates the potential to deliver virtually unlimited quantities of fuel. We currently target commercial delivery of up to 15,000 gallons of diesel and 25,000 gallons of ethanol per acre per year at full-scale production. Furthermore, the modular design of our SolarConverter system makes it readily extensible from smaller industrial operations to large-scale commerical plants, minimizing scale-up risks.
Highly-Efficient Production
Avoiding the use of raw material feedstocks dramatically simplifies Joule's production process, while also removing a costly component that can be subject to significant fluctuations in price and availability. In addition, our process has the capability of achieving up to 50X the efficiencies of biofuel production, with a fraction of the land use.
Highly-Competitive Costs
The efficienices of Joule's production system, which requires fewer resources and less processing than both petroleum- and biomass-derived fuels, will allow Joule to meet or beat the costs of fossil fuels. We expect to deliver diesel for as little as $30 per barrel equivalent.

KILLS ALGAE AND NOTHING ELSE
The next generation algaecide. Coptrol will clear up existing algae, including toxic blue green algae.  Coptrol kills algae and nothing else.
